The essential building blocks for any design or collection are concept, form, texture and colour. These essentials are why designers constantly refer to their physical and emotional presence to find inspiration and direction.
Sketches are an important part of the designers toolkit. They are a way to capture the visual perspective and resolve problems that may arise. They also allow the designer to visualise ideas and details as well as enhance initial design concepts.
To be able to visualise a collection more fully before it is completed, it is often neccessary to create more formal or accurate presentations. Renderings are drawings made for presentation, to effectively communicate information such as an aesthetic statement, or details about a design that can be interpreted correctly by a craftsman.
Masters are made to be the template from which all production can originate. Masters can be made from hand carved wax or metal from which a rubber mould can be made to repeat the original form. Computer Aided Design (CAD) can also be used to make three-dimensional representations which can be used to create a wax cast or to create metal tooling for stamping.
The fabrication of jewellery is a complex process involving a number of skills and techniques. These, combined in sequence will allow a craftsman to create pieces that are frequently delicate yet durable. In production the most commonly used technique is lost wax casting as it readily allows the same form to be reapplied simply, yet highly accurately in all metals traditionally associated with jewellery.
Stones are used often in jewellery for a number of different reasons. Most are used to add colour and beauty, but also to add meaning and promote well being. The beauty of a natural stone lies within its character, individuality and uniqueness. In this regards they are a true partner to metals in jewellery.
